Interventional Pain Treatments and Diagnostic Procedures

Our physician is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  This means that he has had extensive training in the diagnostic and therapeutic options to treat neurologic, orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions and debility secondary to medical conditions.  He is trained to evaluate imaging studies such as, X-rays and MRI’s and can perform EMG and Nerve Conduction Studies, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound guided therapeutic injections.

These are specialized examinations that assess the function of nerves and muscles and are often useful to determine the cause of the patient’s complaints of pain, numbness and tingling, or, weakness.  For example, numbness and tingling in the hand may be due to carpal tunnel syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, or, from a herniated disk in the neck.  EMG/NCV can functionally discriminate between these various causes.

Diagnostic Ultrasound and Ultrasound Guided Injections

Diagnostic ultrasound often has distinct advantages over other imaging modalities, such as, portability, relatively low cost, the ability to see joints in motion, and see nerves when neighboring tendons, ligaments, or other structures move around them.  Small masses, including ganglion cysts or abnormal vascular structures compressing a nerve may also be seen.  Ultrasound also increases the accuracy of therapeutic joint injections and can be useful for caudal epidural injections and sacroiliac injections in the appropriate clinical setting.   Ultrasound can also safely guide injections over neural structures, such as, a median nerve swollen in the carpal tunnel, as in the above picture, often providing excellent relief.
